Science and pedagogics:

His penchant for languages led Wolfgang Aulke to study to study German and ancient philology at the University of Münster from 1978 to 1985; after his teacher’s training and subsequent work as an instrumental teacher for guitar and saxophone, he was accepted as civil servant in 1989.

From 1989 to 1998 he worked as a high school teacher at the Antonianum Vechta high school and from 1998 he joined the school management as coordinator and step leader.

In 2004 Wolfgang Aulke moved from Lower Saxony to Schleswig-Holstein and worked as deputy headmaster at the Gymnasium Schloss Plön until 2020. At the same time, he took over the management of the Latin Commission at the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Education from 2011 to 2020 and worked as a part-time specialist supervisor for Schleswig-Holstein.

Music

Seeing his father's rare guitar playing Wolfgang Aulke learned to play the classical guitar from the age of twelve and was fascinated by the music of guitarist Andre Segovia; one of his teachers was Peter Röseler. From the age of 16, the electric guitar was added to his pool of instruments, which he used in various rock and jazz formations. In 1980 he came aware of the tenor saxophone across with the music of John Coltrane and Michael Brecker. Spontaneously, he bought a Selmer Mark VII and began to practice autodidactically. Regular visits to the North Sea Jazz Festival, which took place in The Hague at the time, deepened access to this instrument. Studies with Wolfgang Engstfeld in Cologne from the mid-1980s refined his technique and the range of usability of this instrument. Since 1987 he has also played a soprano saxophone at recordings and concerts.

During this decade he was a member of numerous formations dedicated to prog rock or jazz rock. At the same time he worked with Wolfgang Köster (Munster) from 1978 to 1990 in the guitar duo "Sequoia", which made numerous appearances on stages and festivals from Frankfurt to Denmark.

In order to expand his range, he acquired a baritone saxophone from Peter Neff in Cologne in 1989. With this instrument he became a member of the big band »Blasnost« (Osnabrück), which won the competition »Jazz-Podium Niedersachen« with compositions by Peter Witte and Robert Kretschmar in 1992, 1994 and 1996.

Numerous band projects followed, including an a cappella ensemble, until Wolfgang Aulke joined the big band »Jazzreaktor« together with the pianist Lars Scheffel in 2007 and, a few years later, took over the musical direction together with him. To this day, this formation plays compositions by the two conductors in annual concert projects.

A new field opened up to him in 2010. As a baritone saxophonist he played chamber music in the quartet »flute&saxes«. Until 2020, the quartet gave numerous concerts with unusual and new arrangements of old masters such as Bach, Byrd, Piazzolla and many others, written by the alto saxophonist of the quartet, Uwe Leuenhagen, as well as own compositions by Wolfgang Aulke. From 2017 he also used his double bass saxophone (Tubax).

In 2010 Wolfgang Aulke joined the field of home recording. With his recording studio he has since produced music recordings as stream, CDs and music videos. In the same year, after almost 20 years, he met the pianist Andreas Schwienhorst, with whom he had already played in various formations in the 1980s. They founded the duo »seesalzjazz«, which since then has performed on stage with their own compositions and jazzy arrangements of serious music.

The current projects, which also include various blues and rock bands, have been enriched by BAT, the »Baltic Acoustic Trio«, since 2023. Here, Wolfgang Aulke, guitarist Uwe Vollertsen and singer Christian Pohlen develop new unplugged arrangements of well-known hits and standards.

Seine Neigung zu Sprachen veranlasste Wolfgang Aulke, ein Studium des Lehramtes für Germanistik und Altphilologie an der Universität Münster von 1978 – 1985 zu absolvieren; nach dem Referendariat und anschließender Tätigkeit als Instrumentallehrer für Gitarre und Saxophon wurde er 1989 in den Schuldienst übernommen.

So arbeitete er von 1989 – 1998 als Gymnasiallehrer am Gymnnasium Antonianum Vechta und kam ab 1998 als Koordinator und Stufenleiter in die dortige Schulleitung.

2004 wechselte Wolfgang Aulke das Bundesland und arbeitete bis 2020 als stellvertretender Schulleiter am Gymnasium Schloss Plön. Parallel dazu übernahm er von 2011 – 2020 die Leitung der Fachkommission Latein am Schleswig-Holsteinischen Bildungsministerium und war als nebenamtliche Fachaufsicht für Schleswig-Holstein tätig.

Musik

Ab seinem 12ten Lebensjahr erlernte Wolfgang Aulke, durch das seltene Gitarrenspiel seines Vaters auf dieses Instrument aufmerksam gemacht und dann fasziniert durch die Musik des Gitarristen Andre Segovia, klassische Gitarre u.a. bei Peter Röseler; autodidaktisch kam ab dem 16. Lebensjahr die E-Gitarre hinzu, die er in verschiedenen Rock- und Jazz-Formationen einsetzte. 1980 wurde er durch die Musik von John Coltrane und Michael Brecker auf das Tenorsaxophon aufmerksam. Spontan kaufte er sich ein Selmer Mark VII und begann, autodidaktisch zu üben. Regelmäßige Besuche des North-Sea-Jazz-Festival, das damals in Den Haag stattfand, vertieften den Zugang zu diesem Instrument. Studien bei Wolfgang Engstfeld in Köln ab Mitte der 80er Jahre verfeinerten seine Techniken und die Bandbreite der Einsetzbarkeit dieses Instruments; seit 1987 spielt er bei Aufnahmen und Konzerten auch ein Sopransaxophon.

In dieser Zeit war er Mitglied zahlreicher Formationen, die sich dem Prog-Rock oder Jazzrock verschrieben hatten. Zugleich arbeitete er von 1978 – 1990 mit Wolfgang Köster (Münster) zusammen im Gitarrenduo »Sequoia«, das zahlreiche Auftritte auf Bühnen und Festivals von Frankfurt bis Dänemark absolvierte.

Um seine Bandbreite zu erweitern, erwarb er 1989 bei Peter Neff in Köln ein Baritonsaxophon. Mit diesem Instrument wurde er Mitglied der Big Band »Blasnost« (Osnabrück), die mit Kompositionen von Peter Witte und Robert Kretschmar 1992, 1994 und 1996 Gewinner des Wettbewerbs »Jazz-Podium Niedersachen« wurde.

Es folgten zahlreiche Bandprojekte, u.a. auch ein A-Cappella-Ensemble, bis Wolfgang Aulke zusammen mit dem Pianisten Lars Scheffel ab 2007 in die Big Band »Jazzreaktor« einstieg und nach wenigen Jahren zusammen mit ihm die musikalische Leitung übernahm. Bis heute spielt diese Formation in jährlichen Konzert-Projekten Kompositionen der beiden Leiter.

Eine ganz andere Ebene eröffnete sich 2010. Als Baritonsaxophonist spielte er im Quartett »flute&saxes« Kammermusik. Bis 2020 gab das Quartett zahlreiche Konzerte mit ungewöhnlichen und neuen Arrangements alter Meister wie Bach, Byrd, Piazzolla u.v.a., die der Altsaxophonist des Quartetts, Uwe Leuenhagen, schrieb, sowie einige Eigenkompositionen von Wolfgang Aulke. Ab 2017 setzte er hier auch sein Kontrabass-Saxophon (Tubax) ein.

2010 stieg Wolfgang Aulke in den Bereich des Home-Recordings ein. Mit seinem Aufnahmestudio produziert er seitdem Musikaufnahmen als Stream, CDs und Musikvideos. Im selben Jahr traf er nach fast 20 Jahren den Pianisten Andreas Schwienhorst wieder, mit dem er schon in den 80er Jahren in verschiedenen Formationen gespielt hatte. Sie gründeten das Duo »seesalzjazz«, das seitdem mit Eigenkompositionen und jazzigen Arrangements von ernster Musik konzertiert.

Zu den aktuellen Projekten gehören neben dem »Jazzreaktor« und »seesalzjazz« auch die Soulband »Baltic Soul Attack« unter der Leitung von Volker Trempler sowie verschiedene Blues-Bands.
